Answer 1: I recommend a service annually. Although a van may not have been used very much,brakes, tyres and water ingress problems can sometimes be more prevalent in little-used vans. Regular checks prevent larger bills ultimately.

Answer 2: In my experience some tyres can show early signs of perishing at around 3 year of age, but in any case should be changed at 5 years. Even if they seem to have plenty of tread depth, degradation of the materials they are made from gradually reduce the performance of tyres. Check out our article on age related tyre problems.

Answer 3: On the last trip of the year, before setting off back home, remove the drain plug or release lever and open all taps including shower, as the van moves about on the way home all the water will drain away.

Answer 4: Disconnect one battery lead from the battery, plug in the mains lead and switch the charger on. You should still be able to switch the 12v lights on if the charger is working.

Answer 7: The caravan internal walls are covered with a non porous vinyl, this tends to trap the moisture and smell inside. The only way to tell for sure is with a damp meter assessment.

Answer 8: The electrolyte level should be checked twice a year, the battery should be charged for 24 hours every 30 days. Do not store your battery on a concrete floor, as the lead in the concrete will drain the power, place on a piece of plywood or workbench.
